I Can Do It By Myself…

I Can Do It By Myself…

The following story is based of a true story and is entirely accurate as told to me, with exception of the names.

My friend Eddy spends a lot of time with a couple and their children from his church family. They eat dinner together multiple times a week. One time, while the couple was cleaning up their oldest son Marcus had just gotten a new Lego set.

Eddy helped Marcus make the Lego set, and Marcus helped when able. Marcus wanted Eddy to do it as quickly as possible so Marcus could play with it. Eddy did, and Marcus started playing with his new Lego Helicopter.

Marcus, came back after a couple minutes with the propellers knocked off. Eddy, takes a moment with Marcus to share with him how to fix it if it ever happens again. He then took off the propellers and had Marcus fix the helicopter.

Marcus, after doing it himself, looks at Eddy and exclaims, “I can do it by myself!I don’t need you. I don’t need ANYONE!!” Marcus then runs out of the room.

A few minutes pass and Marcus comes back with the helicopter in such disrepair that they had to completely rebuild it from scratch and Marcus laments, “Uncle Eddy, I need your help.”

When my friend told me this story, he told him he laughed when Marcus came in because it so correctly states something we do with God all the time.

Eddy is God and Marcus is us. God helps us through things, he teaching us things, and once we think we know how to deal with it, we turn to God and tell him, “I don’t need you, I don’t need anyone!”

The thing is though, we do need God, and we need others. We need God in our life because ultimately we can only be fixed by him and through him. Yet, we also need others, because while they can bring us down, the right people in our lives can help us appreciate what God has given us.

So, the next time you go through something crazy, and God rescues you. Remember little Marcus, and don’t assume that because God showed you how to fix a little, that you can do everything by yourself.
